About Passage through the Port Carling locks
We have been working diligently with the lock master in Port Carling this year to ensure that passage through the locks will be as quick and efficient as possible. There are many changes that have been made this year in respect to the process that should allow us to process 30 boats through in under one hr.
1) There will be lock staff “shepherding” the boats into the Large Lock and that will assist to reduce the times. It will be our intent to load the lock with as many boats on each lift as possible to speed up the process. We would ask that each Captain assist lock staff by “adopting” the nearest recreational/resident boater to them and to make certain they are in place and as “snug” as practical.
Proper execution of staging and securing the boats once inside the locks will ensure quick and efficient processing of the fleet and resident boaters. This part of the process is where most of the time is consumed when not organized properly.
Lets provide a good example of sportsmanship by lending a hand, bumpers or ropes and a show of good faith and willingness to share the waterway in order to make sure we are “off on the right foot”, we ask that one of the early boats contact us within 20 minutes of reaching the lock. This will assist us with making sure that the locks are clear the right way and ready to expedite the first group of boaters upon arrival.
2) Lock Staff will be wearing yellow shirts and tags. Captains, if you have any questions or require anything, ask a Lock Staff member and they will do their best to try and assist.
3) The Small Lock will be available and lock staff will process as many recreational boats as possible to that lock during the period we are going through. Last year the small lock was shut down so this should make a real difference.
4) Once clearing the lock, tie up at the available dock space. You may tie up on the blue lines for the time you are here. There is also additional dock space on Bartelman island and the long finger pier on the north side of the basin with the new docks put in place this year.
5)If it is felt that you require more room, you may leave one row of boats in the lock leaving room for recreational boats. On these boats there should be crew members present at all times as the boats will rise and fall each time we use the lock. Our preference would be these boats should be on the far side from the lock house.
6) Lunch will be served at the Pavilion. In an effort to expedite the process through the locks if some of your crew wants to get off the boats once secured in the locks they can pick up the lunches for the captains and crew that is remaining on the boats.
7) Our stay should be around 1 hour and 45 minutes.
8) we will reverse the lock process on our return with expedited process estimated in under one hr.
